Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) is one of the most dense hardwood materials available today, it is so dense that it actually sinks when placed in water. This makes Ipe the absolute best choice for your outdoor projects like decking and patio furniture.

Because Ipe is so dense and hard it’s naturally resistant to mold, mildew and termites. It also does not contain any knots and does not splinter which makes it an excellent surface to walk on. All these excellent features make ipe decking the only decking material that can last 40 years or more with no maintenance, no pressure washing, and no chemicals applied to the ipe.

Is there any kind of guarantee as to quality upon delivery? I live on the west coast so the shipping time and condition of product on arrival is a big consideration.

Ipe decking will last 40 years? Do you have to treat it with something to make it last that long?

No, you do not need to treat the Ipe decking with anything. It will last 40 years or more with no chemicals or preservatives.

I need to use my deck during winter months in upstate NY and would need to shovel snow that accumulated on the deck…would this product hold up?

    Bob,

One of our mills is located in Buffalo NY and our Ipe Decking has been installed on countless jobs in the north east region that deals with snow and ice in the winter and hot sunny days in the summer. You will not find another decking product that is stronger and more durable than Ipe. Our 1″ x 6″ material can span 16″ joists and our 5/4″ x 6″ material can span 24″ joists with zero deflection this will give your deck more strength for things like snow load, your joist spacing however will need to follow the building code for your area. As far as shoveling the snow off your deck Ipe is one of the hardest woods in the world so you can shovel away and not worry about scratching and damaging the decking.

I have the Ipe in the upper midwest–IL just south of Lake Geneva, WI. We are having ice issues. The problem is the stairs and decks on three entrances are used year around. What about ice melters? What about winter treads? Sounds like you just have to get out there while things are happening and keep the stairs clear….

Hello Bob, Thanks for your question!

We always tell people to use pet safe ice melt as it is a little less abrasive than rock salt.

What do you recommend to keep patio furniture from scratching ipe deck when guests pull out chairs?

    Vicky,

Thank you for you time and inquiry. To stop the furniture from scathing and moving on the deck I would suggest using Rubber Furniture Pads. These protective pads can be placed under the legs of your patio furniture. They can also be found online.

This should do the trick for you. You will want to stay away from the felt ones as the felt will not hold up in an exterior application. But the Rubber or even vinyl ones will work just fine. I hope this helps please let me know if there is anything else that I can do for you.
