Compare Pressure Treated Lumber: MCA vs ACQ
Background Information: In 2004, after dominating the market for more than 70 years, wood treated with CCA (chromated copper arsenate) was withdrawn from residential use due to concerns about health risks from arsenic exposure.
The two options available on the market currently are MCA & ACQ pressure treated lumber. Advantage Trim & Lumber carries only MCA treated lumber. Check out the table below to see the many advantages MCA has over ACQ.

- Micronized copper particles are so tiny no organic solvent is needed to dissolve the copper into the water-based treatment solution.
- Smaller particles make the treatment more effective and less likely to leach out of the wood.
- Micronized-preserved products have a natural look more like untreated Souther Yello Pine.
- Aluminum and standard G-90 galvanized hardware can be used in direct contact with micronized copper–treated lumber.
- Certified by the EPA under Scientific Certification Systems Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP)

- Copper is dissolved in an organic solvent, which is acknowledged as the A (alkaline) in ACQ.
- Larger particles lead to ACQ having a greater tendency to leach copper into soil.
- ACQ lumber looks little like untreated wood which makes an unnatural looking product.
- Requires "corrosion-resistant hardware and fasteners" such as expensive G-185 galvanized or stainless steel
- Not Certified by the EPA
