DESCRIPTION Heartwood varies from light yellow, through golden brown to brick red in color. The wood from Cagayan is usually harder and heavier than from other areas and is blood red in color. It has a characteristic smell. The texture is moderately fine. Weight is around 41 lbs per cu. ft.
BOTANICAL NAME Pterocarpus Indicus
OTHER NAMES Philippine or Solomon's Padauk, Papua New Guinca rosewood. Also known as red narra, yellow narra, sena and angsena.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Not normally used where strength is needed as it is a highly decorative wood. Medium strength in all categories.
WORKING PROPERTIES Can be difficult to work due to wild grain patterns. Moderate dulling effect on cutters. Stains satisfactorily and takes an excellent finish.
DURABILITY Extremely resistant to termites and insect attack and is resistant to preservative treatment.
SEASONING Dries slowly but with little degrade. Red wood requires more care. Small movement in service.
USES High class joinery, furniture and cabinets, carved feet, interior trim, turnery, caskets, any highly decorative uses. Often cut as decorative veneers.
COMMENTS The shavings of this wood will turn water fluorescent blue.
